English

We sit quietly by the lakeside,
listening as the swallows tell us of the southern night.
The southern night has already arrived with them;
the reeds of night steam with a rich ardor.
I have already felt the intoxication of this southern darkness;
you too should breathe the dense scent among these reeds.

You say the Great Bear always seems like a white bear from the cold lands,
and the sight of it chills your whole body.
Just then the swallows skim lightly across the water,
scattering the star-shadows over the lake.
Look for a moment at these constellations in the water:
this is what a southern starry night is like.

You say you suspect that ginkgo pine over there,
as if the snow on its branches had never fully melted.
At this moment a swallow flies up into a palm tree
and breaks into a song of fierce warmth.
Listen for a moment to the swallow's singing:
this is what the southern woods are like.

It always feels as though we were not people of the tropics;
inside our chests there is always the stillness of autumn and winter.
The swallows say that in the south there is a rare flower
that blooms only once after twenty years of solitude.
At that moment I suddenly feel a flower hidden within my chest;
in this quiet night it is about to open like fire.

一面玻璃园镜对着鲜艳的水果;

English

At last we have left behind that city like a fishing net,
that city whose choking, dry, hollow grids
kept hauling us again and again toward despair.

And today this free and immense plain
has gathered us into its embrace from the farthest sky;
we could almost float upon this dense green sea.

We have swum into a blue sea, an orange sea, a russet sea...
O, we see a transparent ocean holding China in its arms,
a glassy orchard mirror facing brilliant fruit;
villages rest upon a sweet half-arched skin,
turning in the sunlight, turning beneath the feet of a file of ants,
while everywhere they walk, listening to spring burst into song.
Listen: their blood is speaking with the breast of the plain.
What is this freshness, never heard before, trying to say?
O, we cannot tell why, perhaps because we are so young,
such inexhaustible joy is pouring through our blood.

We rise and fall across the swelling oil-green fields;
one soft red ribbon slips into another,
a long wide road binding yet another tract of homeland.
Ring after ring of scenery rocks us gently in and out,
and we, always in the same advancing rhythm,
beat our soles against the soft red earth.

We walk the road once walked by the ancestors we love;
for so many years it has been the same boundless plain,
O, the blue sea, the orange sea, the russet sea...
for so many years this plain has surged with abundant harvests.
And now it is you who spread out the same seductive pattern,
waiting for our untamed strength to roll through you. So we go on.
How could we resist? O, we cannot resist
that hope which burned in the hearts of countless generations before us.

How stubborn and enduring this unknowable hope is,
and how free and far-reaching are the roads of China...
